PMP has broader applicability across all project management methodologies. PMI-ACP is the right choice if you work exclusively in agile/scrum environments and want faster payback.

PMP Is the Stronger Long-Term Credential

PMP's 2021 exam update added significant agile content — roughly half the exam now covers agile and hybrid approaches. This makes the older objection ('PMP is waterfall-only') less valid.

For most project managers, PMP is the better investment: wider job market, higher premium, and recognition across industries. PMI-ACP is a good add-on after PMP, not a replacement.

Common Questions

Should I get PMP or PMI-ACP first?
PMP first. It has broader market recognition, a higher salary premium, and covers both waterfall and agile. Add PMI-ACP later if your work becomes exclusively agile-focused and you want to signal deep agile expertise.
Can I hold both PMP and PMI-ACP?
Yes. Many senior project managers hold both. PMP maintenance (60 PDUs/3 yrs) overlaps with PMI-ACP (30 PDUs/3 yrs) — the same PDUs can often satisfy both requirements.
