Which AWS Certification Should You Get First?

1
Currently in IT but not cloud yet
Start with Cloud Practitioner. It's a $100 exam and takes 4-6 weeks. It doesn't dramatically increase your salary on its own, but it proves you understand cloud concepts and often opens doors to cloud-adjacent roles. Then move to SA Associate within 3-4 months.
2
Already have some cloud experience
Skip Cloud Practitioner and go straight to Solutions Architect Associate. The $36,000 salary bump is much larger than the $17,000 from CLF-C01, and employers treat them very differently in hiring. SA Associate is the one that gets you interviews at $110,000-$140,000.
3
Backend developer on AWS infrastructure
Developer Associate over SA Associate. It covers Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, and deployment pipelines — tools you actually use. SA Associate leans more architecture. Same exam cost, and both lead to similar salary bands, but Developer Associate is more directly applicable to day-to-day work.

Preparation Costs: Where to Actually Spend Your Money

AWS exam prep has a cost efficiency problem. The paid courses that rank highest in Google search — official AWS training, Pluralsight, Cloud Academy — run $300-$600/year. They're fine. But Udemy courses by Stephane Maarek or Adrian Cantrill cover the same material for $15-$30 on sale, which is most of the time.

For Solutions Architect Associate: Stephane Maarek's course is $15-$20 on Udemy, covers all exam domains in about 40 hours, and is updated after every major AWS service change. The 6 practice exams sold separately by Jon Bonso (Tutorial Dojo) are $15 and widely considered the best exam practice available. Total prep cost: $30-$35. Total exam cost: $300. All in for $330-$335.

Labs cost extra if you want hands-on practice. AWS Free Tier covers a lot, but running EC2 instances, RDS databases, and load balancers for learning can add up. Budget $20-$50/month in AWS charges if you're doing serious hands-on work. Many people pass on Stephane's course alone without any lab time, though.

The Cloud Practitioner Question

Most experienced IT professionals should skip it. Cloud Practitioner is a conceptual exam — no hands-on questions, no architecture scenarios. It signals "I understand what cloud is" to employers, not "I can build on cloud." If you already work in IT and understand networking, servers, and software deployment, you can study for SA Associate directly and get there in 2-3 months instead of spending 4-6 weeks on CLF first.

The exception is if your company has a learning path that reimburses Cloud Practitioner separately, or if you need the credential for an internal program. Get reimbursed for it if you can, but don't prioritize it over SA Associate for salary impact.

AWS Certification Renewal

All AWS certifications expire after 3 years. Recertification fee is $150 (half the original). You can recertify by passing a current version of the same exam or a higher-level exam in the same track — passing SA Professional automatically renews SA Associate. If you're planning a multi-cert path, stack the professional exam at renewal time to save the $150 fee.

Common Questions

How much does AWS certification cost?
Foundational (Cloud Practitioner): $100 exam. Associate level (SA, Developer, SysOps): $300 each. Professional and Specialty: $300 each. Study materials add $30-$150 depending on resources chosen. Total for SA Associate: $330-$400.
Which AWS certification has the best ROI?
Solutions Architect Associate by a large margin. $300 exam, 2-3 months of study, $36,000 average salary premium. It's the most recognized AWS cert in job descriptions for cloud architecture and infrastructure roles paying $110,000-$140,000.
Do AWS certifications expire?
Yes, after 3 years. Recertification costs $150. You can recertify by passing the same exam again, or by passing a higher-level exam in the same path (SA Professional renews SA Associate automatically).
Should I get Developer Associate or Solutions Architect Associate first?
Developer Associate if you're a backend developer writing code that runs on AWS. SA Associate if you want cloud architecture, infrastructure, or DevOps roles. Both are $300 and take similar prep time. Pick based on target role, not difficulty.
