PSM I Is Underrated. CSM Is Overpriced.
That's the honest take. PSM I costs $200 and is exam-only — no training required. It's a harder exam than CSM (PSM I has a 85% passing score threshold vs 74% for CSM). But employers largely treat them as equivalent. The Scrum Alliance brand name on CSM is slightly more recognized, but the $1,300 premium over PSM I is hard to justify for what is effectively the same credential in the job market.
If you're paying out of pocket: PSM I. If your employer is paying: CSM, because the 2-day training has genuine educational value beyond the cert. You actually learn from a Scrum Alliance-certified trainer. That context makes CSM worth the higher price when you're not paying it yourself.
SAFe Scrum Master: When It Matters
Large enterprises running Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) often require SAFe-specific credentials. Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, large banks, and federal agencies that have adopted SAFe look for SAFe Scrum Master over CSM or PSM specifically. If your target employer uses SAFe — check the job postings — SAFe SM is the right choice. Otherwise, PSM I or CSM cover the vast majority of Scrum Master positions.
Scrum Master vs Product Owner Salary
Product Owner certifications (CSPO, PSPO) carry a slightly higher salary premium than Scrum Master certs — roughly $5,000-$10,000 more annually at equivalent experience levels. If you're deciding which Scrum certification to pursue first, your interest in facilitation vs product strategy should guide the choice more than salary. The career paths diverge: Scrum Master leads toward Agile coaching, RTE (Release Train Engineer), or engineering management. Product Owner leads toward product management and product leadership roles.
