CCNA Certification: Cost vs Salary Increase

$330 exam. One of the highest-recognized entry-to-mid networking certs in the industry — here's the salary data and who gets the most out of it.

CCNA Total Cost Breakdown

Item Cost
Exam fee (200-301) $330
Official Cert Guide by Wendell Odom (Vol 1 + 2) $100–$120
Jeremy's IT Labs (free YouTube) or CBT Nuggets ($59/mo) $0–$120
Packet Tracer (free from Cisco NetAcad) $0
Boson NetSim or physical lab equipment (optional) $0–$200
Realistic total (budget route) $440–$480
Realistic total (with premium resources) $550–$770
3-year renewal (recertification exam or higher cert) $330

Cisco exam fees as of 2026. Cisco Packet Tracer is free for NetAcad students. CCNA expires in 3 years — passing a CCNP automatically renews CCNA. Wendell Odom's Official Cert Guide is widely considered the best study resource.

CCNA Salary Impact by Role

Role Without CCNA With CCNA Annual Increase
Network technician $50,000 $70,000 +$20,000
Network administrator $62,000 $83,000 +$21,000
Network engineer $78,000 $99,000 +$21,000
ISP / telecom technician $55,000 $74,000 +$19,000

CCNA in 2026: Still Relevant?

Cisco's footprint in enterprise networking is still enormous — routers, switches, firewalls. CCNA validates that you can configure and troubleshoot that equipment, which is work that hasn't gone away. But the cert's relevance has shifted: 10 years ago CCNA was nearly mandatory for networking roles. Today it's strong but not universal, as some environments have moved to software-defined networking or cloud-only architectures where Cisco CLI is less relevant.

The cert still commands a $20,000-$21,000 premium in the right contexts. ISPs, managed service providers, healthcare IT (heavy physical infrastructure), and enterprise networking teams at non-tech companies are the best targets. Pure cloud companies and startups that run on AWS or Azure with no physical networking layer care less about CCNA.

CCNA vs CCNP: Plan Before You Start

CCNP Enterprise requires CCNA as a prerequisite and adds roughly $15,000-$20,000 on top of the CCNA premium. If your goal is a senior network engineer role at $115,000-$130,000, plan for both from the beginning. The study material overlaps significantly, and it's more efficient to go CCNA → CCNP with continuous studying than to fully stop after CCNA and restart 2 years later.

Lab Practice: Where to Get It for Free

Cisco Packet Tracer simulates most CCNA concepts and is free for NetAcad users (free account). It doesn't simulate everything (some physical layer issues require real hardware) but covers 90%+ of what the exam tests. For supplemental practice, GNS3 with Cisco IOS images is free but requires finding your own IOS images legally — check with your employer or Cisco NetAcad subscription. Physical equipment (old Catalyst 2960 switches) runs $30-$80 on eBay if you want real hardware lab experience.

Common Questions

How much does CCNA cost?
The exam fee is $330. Study resources vary: Wendell Odom's Official Cert Guide (two volumes) is $100-$120 combined and is the most comprehensive written resource. Jeremy's IT Labs on YouTube is free and highly rated for the video portion. Total all-in: $430-$650 depending on what you use. Lab practice through Cisco Packet Tracer is free.
How long does CCNA take to prepare for?
3-6 months for most people. The exam covers a wide range of topics: IP routing, switching, VLANs, ACLs, wireless, automation/programmability, network security basics. People with hands-on networking experience typically prepare in 3 months. Those coming from IT support or server admin backgrounds usually need 4-5 months to build the networking fundamentals. Study 1-2 hours per day on weekdays.
Is CCNA better than Network+ for networking careers?
For networking roles specifically, yes. CCNA is vendor-specific (Cisco) but Cisco dominates enterprise networking equipment, so "vendor-specific" isn't limiting in most environments. Network+ is vendor-neutral and takes less study time, but CCNA commands a higher salary premium and is more widely respected in networking job postings. If your goal is a networking career, CCNA is the better investment of time and $170 more in exam fees.
