Trade Career Profiles

Electrician

Highest ceiling in the trades. IBEW apprenticeships are free and pay $18–$25/hr during training. Journeyman license after 4–5 years opens union jobs at $60–$95K. Master electrician license adds $15–$25K/yr and enables self-employment. Union metro markets (NYC, SF, Seattle) pay $90–$130K for journeymen.

Path: Apprentice (paid, 4–5 yrs) → Journeyman License → Master License → Self-employed / contractor
HVAC Technician

Fastest trade to enter. Community college programs run 6–18 months for $1,200–$5,000. EPA 608 certification required for refrigerant handling ($30 exam). NATE certification adds credibility and $5–$10K premium. Strong job security — residential HVAC is immune to automation and offshoring.

Path: Vocational program (6–18 mo) → EPA 608 → Journeyman → NATE cert → Commercial/industrial roles
Plumber

UA apprenticeship is free (5 years, paid from day one). Trade school alternative costs $2–$6K for faster initial entry. Journeyman median salary: $61,550. Master plumber license adds $15–$25K and the ability to pull permits and run a company. Self-employed masters earn $100–$180K in high-cost markets.

Path: Apprentice (free, 5 yrs) → Journeyman License → Master License → Business owner
Welder

Wide salary range — general shop welding pays $35–$50K, structural welding (AWS D1.1) pays $55–$80K, and pipeline welding pays $70–$120K+. Individual certifications stack: each AWS or ASME test you pass adds qualifications for higher-paying work. Certification tests run $300–$600 each.

Path: Vocational training → Entry welding → AWS certifications (structural, pipe) → Pipeline / specialty
CDL Driver

Fastest path to a trade income. Company-sponsored CDL training is free in exchange for a 1-year driving commitment — you're earning while you qualify. Private CDL schools cost $4–$8K but give more flexibility. Tanker and hazmat endorsements add $8–$15K/yr. OTR long-haul averages $65K; specialized freight and local delivery can reach $85K.

Path: CDL Class A training (3–6 mo) → OTR or regional → Endorsements (tanker, hazmat) → Owner-operator
