Azure's free renewal model is a genuine advantage that rarely gets enough credit. AWS certifications expire every 3 years and cost $150 to renew. If you hold AWS SA Associate + Developer + Security Specialty, that's $450 every 3 years in renewal fees. Azure's model doesn't punish you for holding multiple certs.

And in Microsoft-heavy environments — financial services, government, healthcare IT shops running Office 365 and Azure AD — Azure certification is equally or more recognized than AWS. If your employer lives in the Microsoft stack, get Azure first.

Which One First?

If you're choosing one: check your target employer's job postings. Count how many say "AWS" vs "Azure" in the requirements. That's your answer. Not abstract market share numbers. Your specific job market.

If your employer or a realistic target employer uses Azure infrastructure: AZ-104. The cert is cheaper, faster to study for, and directly applicable. If you're doing general job searching in tech: AWS SA Associate gives you more options in most US markets.

The combined path is smart for cloud consulting roles. AWS SA Associate + AZ-104 gives you coverage in both major platforms. Study them sequentially — 3–4 months total. The overlap in cloud concepts makes the second cert easier to pass than the first.

Skip the Fundamentals Certs

AZ-900 and AWS Cloud Practitioner add almost nothing to your salary. AZ-900: $165 exam, $8,000 salary premium. Cloud Practitioner: $100 exam, $17,000 premium. Both are stepping stones designed for non-technical professionals who want to understand cloud. If you're technical, skip them.

The one exception: if your employer reimburses certs sequentially and requires you to pass fundamentals first, take them on the company's dime and move to the associate cert as fast as possible. Don't spend your own money on fundamentals when the associate cert is what employers actually care about.
