IT Certifications That Get You to $100K

Terraform Associate: The $100K shortcut

At $170 total cost (exam + study materials), Terraform Associate is the cheapest path to $100K in the data. Average salary: $120,000. The reason it punches above its price tag: Terraform is infrastructure-as-code, which is a skill every cloud team needs. The cert signals DevOps fluency in a way that $170 shouldn't be able to buy.

The catch: you need to understand infrastructure before this cert makes sense. It's not beginner-friendly. AWS, Azure, or GCP experience first, then Terraform. But if you already have that background, this is the fastest $20K–$30K raise on the market.

AWS Solutions Architect: Best job market breadth

30,000+ active U.S. job postings list AWS SA as required or preferred. No other cert comes close on volume. Average salary: $131,000. Total cert cost: $500. Payback period at $95K current salary: under 2 months.

The exam is hard. It requires understanding of 40+ AWS services, architecture trade-offs, and cost optimization. Study time for someone with existing AWS experience: 4–6 weeks. For someone new to AWS: 3–4 months. The pass rate for first attempts is roughly 65%.

For the combination of job availability, salary ceiling, and career durability, AWS SA is the single strongest $100K cert.

CKA: Highest average salary

Certified Kubernetes Administrator averages $132,000 — the highest in the data. Kubernetes runs container workloads at scale, and demand has outrun the supply of people who actually know how to operate it. The exam is performance-based: you get a live cluster and 2 hours to fix it. No multiple choice.

The prerequisite: you need to know Docker and have worked with containers. This is not an entry-level cert. But for engineers already in the DevOps or platform engineering space, CKA is the fastest path to clearing $130K.

CISSP: The security $100K cert

CISSP averages $131,000 and is the gold standard in information security. The catch: you need 5 years of paid security work experience before you're eligible to certify. You can take the exam and pass it without the experience — you'd become an Associate of ISC2 — but you can't call yourself CISSP until the experience requirement is met.

If you're already in security with 4+ years of experience, CISSP is mandatory. The exam costs $749 plus $350 in study materials. That's real money, but the $36,000 annual salary lift pays back in under 4 months. For anyone targeting security management or senior security engineer roles, the math is obvious.

PMP: Slowest payback, strong ceiling

PMP averages $111,000 and requires 36 months of documented project management experience plus 35 hours of formal education. The total upfront cost is $955 minimum (more if you use a live course instead of self-study). Payback at $85K current salary runs 4–5 months — the slowest of any $100K cert.

It's worth it if you manage projects professionally. The salary premium for PMP-certified project managers is real and consistent across industries. But if you're not already doing project management work, PMP doesn't open a door — it just validates a door you're already standing in.

Certs that average under $100K

CompTIA Security+: $88,000 avg. Solid, but this is an entry cert. The path to $100K from Security+ is experience + CISSP, not just waiting.

CompTIA A+: $55,000 avg. Foundation cert. Not a $100K credential on its own.

CCNA: $83,000 avg. Networking-focused. The $100K Cisco credential is CCIE, not CCNA.

Google Data Analytics: $74,000 avg. Entry data cert, not a $100K cert. Google Professional Data Engineer is the six-figure target.

Common Questions

How many certs do I need to reach $100K?
Usually one or two, plus experience. AWS Solutions Architect alone averages $131K, but that average includes people with 5+ years of AWS experience. One mid-level cert plus 2–3 years of relevant experience is the typical combination that clears $100K. A cert without experience gets you the first half of the salary; the experience fills the gap.
What's the minimum experience needed to earn $100K with a cert?
Typically 2–4 years in the relevant field. AWS SA fresh out of a support role at 2 years commonly gets to $100K–$110K at mid-market companies. At larger companies or in high cost-of-living metros (SF, NYC, Seattle), the threshold drops to 1–2 years. The cert signals competence; the experience signals risk reduction for employers.
Which $100K cert is easiest to pass?
Terraform Associate has the highest pass rate of the $100K certs, around 75–80%. AWS Solutions Architect Associate sits around 65% first-attempt pass rate. CKA is the hardest — performance-based, live cluster, ~50–60% first-attempt pass rate. CISSP has a famously low pass rate (roughly 50%) but is a broad exam where preparation time matters more than difficulty.
Is $100K realistic without a CS degree?
Yes. Cloud engineers, DevOps engineers, and security engineers routinely earn $100K+ without CS degrees at companies that care about skills over credentials. The combination of AWS SA or Azure Admin plus 3 years of hands-on cloud experience gets there without a degree at most mid-market tech companies. FAANG and large financial firms are harder without degrees at higher comp bands, but they're not the whole market.
